👻 Favourite scary read for Halloween:

   This book isn’t out and out scary but it has a creepy feel to it and I just couldn’t put it down so it is definitely my favourite!

🎃 Scariest book cover. Like ever.

   I love Brandon Sanderson’s covers and this one creeped me out so much before I read the book and probably even more since lol

👻 If you could pick any author to go trick or treating with, who would you pick?

I want to go trick or treating with J K Rowling and I want to go trick or treating at Hogwarts and I don’t’ think that’s unreasonable!

🎃 If you could dress up as any bookish character for Halloween, who would you be?

   I think I might even have to do this next year!

👻 If you could find anything from any book in your trick or treat stash, what would you hope to find?

  Dwayne Johnson, I think it would be more of a trick or treat sack but if I found him in there I’d be pretty pleased ☺️

🎃 In what fictional world would you like to go trick or treating?

I think you’d get a pretty interesting stash in Middle Earth

👻 what book villain would you not like to meet alone in a dark alley on Halloween?

  Voldemort would be pretty much the worst person to run in to, he’d just kill you no matter what!

🎃 would you rather dress up as a vampire, zombie, werewolf or shadowhunter?

  It would be easier to look good as any of the others but if I’m dressing up I think I’d rather go all out as a zombie!
👻pick a candy (just one) from Harry Potter that you would love to find in your stash

I’d go with Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans because they are technically every candy anyway!

🎃What is your favourite Halloween candy?

I just like dairy milk chocolate lol I never want anything else’s!

Mean Girls Book Tag 💃🏻

  
In the general tradition that I have created for myself of just doing tags I haven’t been tagged to do, I’m doing this one! So here goes…

1.“It’s pronounced like Cady” – which fictional character’s name do you get completely wrong?

Hermione 🙈 she was Harmony to me for a long time lol

  
2. “She doesn’t even go here!” – which character would you like to place in a fictional world from another book or series?

I’d like to stick Celeana Sardothian in The Hunger Games because let’s be honest, she would be the best contestant ever! 

  
3. “On Wednesdays we wear pink!” – Repetition. Repetition. Which book gave you dejavu of another book while reading it?

50 Shades of Grey gave me Twilight dejavu for obvious reasons lol. A friend of mine bet me I wouldn’t be able to guess what happened in the end and I laughed as I told her how the whole thing would play out. 😋

  
4. “You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores.” – which book gave you the complete opposite of girl power feels?

Watership Down. They’re all rabbits. And boys. (Also did the cartoon give anyone else nightmares? 😱)

  
5. “You go Glen Coco!” – name a character you felt like you wanted to cheer on while reading.

Katniss Everdeen! I mean yeah it was a trilogy so I was fairly sure she’d survive the Hunger Games but I was cheering her on all the way! 🎉

  
6. “Get in loser, we’re going shopping!” – how long do you typically spend in a book shop?

If I’m alone or with my sister we could be talking hours, if I’m with my husband I’ll be lucky to get 10 minutes *sigh*

7. “It’s not my fault you’re like in love with me or something!” – which fictional character would have to get a restraining order on you if they were real?

Probably Chaol Westfall and Edward Cullen 😳 Also if Dwayne Johnson ever got too close to me he might have a problem…

  
8. “I can’t help it if I’m popular.” –which overhyped book were you cautious about reading?

Twilight. I hated the idea of it and even let someone ruin the whole plot for me before eventually deciding to give it a go and loving it lol

  
9. “She’s a life ruiner. She ruins peoples lives.” – we all love Regina George. Name a villain you couldn’t help but love.

Eric in Divergent. 😍 so maybe I fell for him a bit too hard but I stand by it!

  
10. “I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.” – your favourite fictional parents.

I generally hate parents in everything lol they’re always trying to be downers on everything (Clary’s mom 😡) but there is an obvious exception to the rule – Molly and Arthur Weasly! (Not movie Molly though 😡)

  
11. “That’s so fetch!” – which book or series would you love to catch on? 

I think this series is already fairly popular but I never seem to find anyone else who has read it and it’s great! 

  
12. “How do I even begin to explain Regina George?” – describe your ideal character to read about.

I think I just love a badass. Someone tough and in control who knows what they like and what they don’t and goes after what they want in life 

13. “I just have a lot of feelings.” – what do you do when a book gives you a bad case of ‘the feels?’

Try (and fail) to explain it to my husband, get frustrated, search for someone who has read it and knows, usually fail, get frustrated, read on lol

14. “Nice wig Janice, what’s it made from? Your mom’s chest hair?” – which characters one-liners would you love to claim for yourself?

The one that springs to mind is Effie from The Hunger games

Confessions of a writer tag…

  
I was tagged to do this by Melanie so thank you! This looks fun and a little daunting but here goes nothing…
This tag was created by a little bookish a little writerly and the rules are listed there!

1. When did you first start writing? Was being a writer something you always wanted to do?

I first started writing my Cage of Lies books in August 2013 but have been writing on and off since I was a kid. I always wanted to be a writer and it was something I always just said and bpnever really did much about so one day I just decided to stop talking about it and stat doing it!

  
2. What genre do you write?

So far Dystopia but I have an apocalyptic series running around in my head which will probably follow and I’d love to do fantasy one day too!

  
3. Can you tell us a little about your current work in progress? When did you start working on this project?

I’m currently working on Broken, the third instalment of my Cage of Lies saga. I’m in more of an editing stage with it than all out writing and as it’s the third book I won’t give too much away but this one is emotionally more difficult than the others. Maya, my protagonist, is dealing with a lot of difficult issues in her personal life as well as the ongoing struggles that run throughout the series. I’ve been working on the series for a few years but can’t be sure exactly when I started in this book!

4. What was your first piece that you can remember writing? What was it about?

The first piece I can actually remember writing was a fantasy with lots of dragons and people who lived in cities in the clouds. It started off with this little hermit guy who was guarding a town in the middle of the city. Some people came and kidnapped a girl from the town and killed the hermit… I didn’t finish it but maybe one day I’ll find it and see if there’s anything there that I can use going forward lol

  
5. What’s the best part about writing?

I get go on an adventure every day!

  
6. What’s the worst part about writing?

Killing off characters you love because the plot demands it 😭

7. What’s the name of your favourite character and why? (This can be from another author or your own work. Book crushes are perfectly acceptable here as well.)

Today, it’s Harry Potter I don’t have to tell you why because you already know! 

  
8. How much time a day/week do you get to write? When is the best time for you to write (morning or night)?

Time of day doesn’t make much difference to me. I tend to write when I get in from work in the evenings or on my days off and I’ll squeeze some into my lunch breaks too. When I’m in all out writing mode I have a minimum of 2000 words a day to write but on my days off I make that 8000 and I’ve managed 12000 a few times ☺️

9. Did you go to college for writing? Or if you haven’t been to college yet, do you plan to?

I didn’t. I don’t think it matters as I think writing is a passion and you can either do it or you can’t. Everyone’s routes to it are different but for me college wasn’t part of my journey.

10. What bothers you more: spelling errors, punctuation errors or grammar errors?

They all bother me but I’d go for grammar because I can’t bear it when people get their there and they’re muddled – it sets my teeth on edge! 

  
11. What is the best writing advice that anyone has given you?

Write what you love. If you love the story you are trying to tell then you will get it written, edited and out there. If you don’t love it you’ll lose momentum along the way…

12. What advice would you give to another writer?

Write the book you want to read. Don’t try and please anyone else, don’t compromise your vision and when you finish it you’ll be proud of it!

13. What are your favourite writing sites or blogs that you turn to for help, tips or encouragements?

To be honest I’ve never used any 😕 I just do what feels natural and I have my sister to discuss any issues with or offer encouragement!

14. Besides writing, what else do you enjoy doing? What are your hobbies?

Reading lol I love working out and watching movies and playing video games if I get the chance too.

  
15. What is the best book you’ve read this year?

Ahhhh this is so hard but I think Queen of Shadows pips it for me!

  
16. What is the best movie you’ve seen this year?

Ahhh this is hard too 😬 maybe the new Terminator as that sounds out in my mind

  
17. What is your favourite book or series of all time?

I don’t know I don’t know! I’m going for Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and the Twilight saga oh and Lord of the Rings and probably more too because I have too many!

18. Who is your favourite author?

I can’t pick. If I do a list it will have more than ten names on it so I just won’t lol

19. What are your plans for the rest of the year in terms of your writing?

I’ll be editing and trying to release Broken and I think I’ll try to write and release another novella called Embers (I can’t give away anything about that one for spoilers lol)

Ultimate Harry Potter Book Tag

I found this tag on fandomsontherun and she kindly tagged any huge Harry Potter fans to do it so I am! Check out her blog, it’s really great ☺️

And now for the tag…

1. Favourite Book?

  

I always remember that first time I read this and I was sooooo shocked that Sirius wasn’t evil and Wormtail was Scabbers and just everything about it! I think it might even have been the first book I stayed up reading through the night 😱

2. Least favourite book?

  
This was a tough one but it basically comes down to Umbridge! I just hated her so much and I couldn’t bear being in her company lol 🐸

3. Favourite movie?

  

The Deathly Hallows part 2 adaptation was amazing! I was so excited for it to come out and I was blown away by it! I can’t even remember how many times I ended up going to the cinema, I just know it was worth every penny lol

4. Least favourite movie?

  

I just disliked the way they did goblet of fire 😪. I felt that Fleur was badly cast and didn’t look or act right at all, some of the excitement that was so present in the book was just missing from the film, they cut out so many of my favourite little bits, the maze was just wrong and did anyone see the god awful haircuts they all had? 💇🏽

5. Favourite quote?

  
This is a tough one because I love so many but today I’d say this one! 😊

6. Favourite Weasley?

  

An obvious one but any other answer would be a lie!

7. Favourite female character?

  

Again an obvious one but at the same time I don’t think there is anyone else who even comes close!

8. Favourite villain?

  

Bellatrix was just so utterly perfectly evil. She didn’t even seem to have much motivation beyond just liking to be evil lol 

9. Favourite male character?

  

Okay, you get it, I just love the obvious ones but I can’t imagine any other answer being true!

10. Favourite professor?

  

I love Mcgonagall! She’s firm but fair, sometimes she’s a cat and she’s a total badass when it comes to the crunch 😻

11. Would you rather a) wash Snape’s hair or b) spend a day listening to Lockhart rant about himself?

  

I’d have to take Lockhart, I actually find him kinda funny and I ain’t touching those greasy locks for anything!

12. Would you rather duel a) an elated Bellatrix or b) an angry Molly?

  

I don’t happen to be evil, so though she may well whoop my ass, I don’t think Molly would actually kill me 😲

13. Would you rather travel to Hogwarts via the Hogwarts express or flying car?

  

This is a no brainer, apart from all the great reasons to want to take the Hogwarts express, that car had no air con and no snacks! Screw that!

14. Would you rather kiss Voldemort or give Umbridge a bubble bath?

  

I’d give her a bubble bath and drown her!

15. Would you rather ride a Hippogriffe or a Firebolt?

  

I can’t really imagine any way that sitting on a broom is comfortable at all plus I love Buckbeak 😍

16. Is there any character that you felt differently about in the movies?

  

I loved Molly in the books but she sets my teeth on edge in the movies! I just felt she was so annoying and over-acted and her voice was so irritating and I could go on but I’ll stop myself…

17. Is there a movie you proffered to the book?

No, I can’t really compare them like that. I love books and movies in such different ways that I just… Can’t…

18. Richard Harris or Michael Gambon as Dumbledore?

  

I loved them both but I think of Michael Gambon when I think of Dumbledore so I’ll go with that

19. Your top thing (person or event) that wasn’t in the movie that you wanted there the most?

  

The chase through Hogwarts at the end of The Half Blood Prince, I loved that part of the books so much, it might even be my favourite! I can’t believe they cut it and I can’t believe they made that awful explosion at the Weasleys’ house instead 😡

20. If you could remake any of the movies which would it be?

   

 
It’s a toss up becuase I felt both of these weren’t done right. I did enjoy Half Blood Prince despite the changes though so I guess I’d do Goblet of Fire because I actually find that one hard to watch 😁

21. Which house was your first gut feeling you’d be a parof?

  

I know everyone want to be in Gryffindor but I do think I’d fall in that category ☺️

22. Which house were you actually sorted into on Pottermore?

  

Boom! It’s for true 💃🏻

23. Which class would be your favourite?

  

Defence Against the Dark Arts, obviously while Remus was there ideally but that’s the one I want to do!

24. Which spell do you think would be the most useful to learn?

  

And this says nothing about how clumsy I am… 😳

25. Which character do you think you’d instantly become friends with?

  

Fred and George! (This says nothing at all about the way I used to behave at school) 😋

26. If you could own one of the three Hallows, which would it be?

  

I’m not entirely sure why anyone would want anything else! I don’t even think Harry should have tossed it lol ultimate power mwahahah (totally for good though)

27. Is there any aspect of the books you’d want to change?

  

Not Colin specifically lol but all the deaths at the end of the final book. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have happened, I just thought they deserved better. I wanted to know how they died, who they were protecting and how it went down. I hated just seeing the bodies of Lupin and Tonks and Fred and the rest and them never getting their final moment 😭

28. Favourite Marauder?

  

I’d go with Sirius, I just felt like he was so much fun at school and I would have liked to be his friend!

29. If you could bring one character back to life, who would it be?

  

This was so tough! But I just think that Sirius had such a crap time of it. His best friend died and no one knew the truth but him and then he was sent to Azkaban only to finally escape and have to live in secret stuck in that house he hated and then he just died in such a random way when he and Harry could have had so much together – I just felt that he deserved a chance at happiness 

30. Hallows or Horcruxes?

  

Hallows! Apart from all of the obvious reasons, Horcruxes seem to steal your nose! 😲

The Reading Habits Tag 📚

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I’m a bit of a Sheldon  😳 I have a spot on the couch and I don’t even like other people to sit there if I’m not there… I also take books up to bed too.

  
2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

 I used to do random bits of paper but when one of my besties found out I was writing a book she got me a lovely bookmark which I now treasure. It means a lot to me because she believed in me and it always makes me smile when I open a book and find it! 

  
3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop at the end of a chapter / after a certain amount of pages?

I tend to binge read so I’ll be cramming a book into every available moment when I’m into it. That may mean I end up stopping randomly half way through a page and doing the shifty sideways bookmark malarkey! But I prefer to finish a chapter, although if it’s a cliffhanger I’ll read another page or two, or three…

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

 Much to the detriment of my clothes the answer is yes lol. I tend to hold my book away safely but then I’m not paying enough attention to the fork – mouth ratio and sadly it doesn’t always end well. I know I shouldn’t do it but I can’t always bear to put a book down for something as boring as dinner 🍕

5. Multitasking: music or TV whilst reading?

I always have the TV on. Always. I find one thing alone doesn’t keep me occupied unless it’s really good (walking dead and game of thrones are pretty much the only shows I’ll give my full attention) and if a book sucks me in far enough then I’ll just block the TV out. But generally I can do both simultainiously and know exactly what’s going on in both. Maybe I’m odd but I’m okay with that 😊

6. One book at a time or several on the go?

One book to rule them all! (Shameless lotr reference) if I’m in then I’m in and I don’t really do dnf. I’ll force my way through regardless and reserve my opinion until the very end. But generally I just get obsessed and zoom through books one after another so quickly that I don’t really consider picking up anything else.

7. Read at home or everywhere?

Everywhere! Home, work, car and if I’ll toss it in my handbag wherever I’m going just in case some free time appears. I actually enjoy waiting rooms lol. 

  
8. Read aloud or silently in your head?

In my head. Reading aloud is just words but in my head there’s a whole world of people and voices and places going on! 

9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?

Never!!! Sometimes I put my hand over the bottom of the page during something tense so I can’t even skip a few lines. 

  
10. Breaking the spine or keeping it new?

I don’t particularly do either. I don’t bend my books back on themselves but I do open them – I’m not going to squint into the middle just to avoid a crease on the spine. 

11. Do you write in books?

The freestyle writing challenge 🎉

Thanks to Caroline for nominating me for this cool challenge, I hope I do you proud! Check out her blog if you haven’t already – it’s really great.

So the challenge is as follows:

  1. Open a blank document. 
  2. Set a timer to 5 minutes. I’ve posted a topic at the bottom of this post for you to use as your inspiration but don’t scroll down until the second you’re ready to write! Once you start writing, don’t stop until the alarm sounds. 
  3. Don’t cheat by going back and spell checking or correcting grammar. (The challenge is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible though-flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write with correct spelling and grammar.)
  4. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation or capitals. 
  5. At the end of your post, put down the amount of words you managed to write. 
  6. Copy and paste the entire passage on your blog post with a new topic for your nominees and post these rules too. I’m nominating three bloggers but feel free to choose as many as you’d like. Also no pressure for the people I’ve nominated if you don’t fancy it and feel free to have a go if I didn’t nominate you because I’d love to see what you write from my idea ☺️

This is the freestyle writing challenge I was given by Caroline:

You drop in unexpectedly on a friend to surprise them after returning from a long trip. You find their front door open and decide to go inside. After calling out and receiving no response you move further into the house. On inspecting the lounge you spot a bookcase across the room which has been dragged forward to reveal a door. You cross the room and hear angry voices approaching from behind. What do you do?

And this is my freestyle response, I managed 224 words 😁

The rain pounds down on my umbrella as I race down the street. I suppress a grin as I reach Jenna’s apartment block and let myself in with the code. She’s going to be so psyched to see me. 

I take the steps two at a time, almost tripping on the final one before reaching her floor. 

The smile slips from my face as I see the broken door. 

“Jenna?” I call uncertainly as I take a step towards it. 

A chill runs down my spine. I move closer and peer inside. 

“Jenna?” Her apartment is a mess, furniture flung everywhere and he belongings scattered. Her bookcase is broken on the ground and where it always stood there is a door. 

I’ve spent so much time in this apartment that I can’t count it but I’ve never seen that door. 

“Check inside!” Someone shouts from the stairwell. “Make sure no ones left alive. 

I duck into the apartment, my feet slip on an upturned book but I make it to the door. The handle is warm. I ignore the urge to run and twist it instead. 

Inside the air burns hot as a furnace and I recoil. 

“I’m gunna kill that little cow when I catch up with her,” the voice shouts, closer still. 

I step inside and slam the door, my heart racing.

The infinite playlist: songs for favourite OTPs tag 🎼

  

Thank you Tanazmasaba for picking me to do your new tag 😍 this is a really fun one and I’ll do my best to do it justice! 

So, the idea behind this tag is to make a list of your favourite books and what songs make you think of them. I can’t promise that my choices will make much sense to anyone else but I’ll give this a go lol

  1. Harry Potter – With a little help from my friends by The Beetles For me this is fairly self explanatory, Harry, Ron and Hermione forever 😍
  2. The Hunger Games – Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the Machine If Katniss’ mantra isn’t ‘f**k you, I won’t do what you tell me’ then I’m not sure what else it would be 
  3. Twilight – Halo by Beyoncé  I think the words pretty much encompass Bella and Edward’s relationship for me, for example ‘It’s like I’ve been awakened, Every Rule I had you breakin’, It’s the risk that I’m takin’, I ain’t never gonna shut you out!’ 
  4. Blood Red Road – 8 Mile by Eminem This song is all about struggle and trying to achieve something that seems out of reach without ever giving up which sums up these books about as well as the blurb
  5. Throne of Glass – Roxanne the Moulin Rouge version because it’s badass Okay so this one has nothing to do with lyrics but the feeling of the song is so gritty and raw and I just love it. 
  6. Divergent – Numb by Linkin Park It’s the lyrics again for this one, basically the whole song but here’s the chorus I case you don’t know it ‘I’ve become so numb, I can’t feel you there, become so tired, so much more aware, I’m becoming this, all I want to do, is be more like me and be less like you’ 
  7. Game of Thrones – Bad Blood by Taylor Swift I’m fairly sure that this covers the relationships between the Starks and the Lannisters and just about everyone else in the books too ‘now we’ve got problems, and I don’t think we can solve them, you made a really deep cut, and baby now we got bad blood’ ha 😂
  8. Prince of Thornes – Cry me a River by Justin Timberlake It’s not really the song in general but that ‘cry me a river’ I-couldn’t-give-crap-about-you attitude part of it really makes me think of this book because Jorg is such a sadist a-hole. (In the best possible way)

Unpopular opinions Book tag

I was tagged to do this by the wonderful KimsiangLim. I’m excited to do it but I always find something to like in everything so apologies in advance for that fact that my opinions are never harsh lol

So here goes:

1. A popular book or series that you didn’t like.

  

Ok so I’ll start off right away by saying I did actually like this lol. It’s only that within the first three chapters, I guessed what the twist would be. I then read the book eagerly to find out if I was wrong (I wasn’t) and was a little disappointed to find that I wasn’t at all surprised. This is just the way my mind works and the reason I don’t generally read thrillers but I did like the writing style and thought the characters were really well put together. It was just that with all the hype I had been hoping it would be the beginning of me reading this genre and it wasn’t…

2. A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

  

Twihard till I die. (The Twilight Saga)  I don’t get why everyone feels the need to hate on these books but I love them.

3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn about spoilers) or an OTP that you don’t like. 

   

**Spoiler alert for anyone who has been living under a rock**

Gale was fitter, stronger, braver and actually suited Katniss. Fair enough she was never all that bothered on either of them but I always felt like everything with Peeta was forced on her through necessity and or guilt. And did I mention how fit Gale is? Because he’s so fit!

4. A popular book genre that you hardly ever reach for. 

Basically anything set in the present where normal things happen. I don’t know what you’d call those genres but I love historical fiction and my heart belongs to all thing fantasy and sci fi but there isn’t enough escapism in realism for me lol

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like. 

  

Is she beloved? I have no idea but my gosh do I hate Catelyn Stark! In a good way because she’s written so well that I genuinely hate her passionately but it gets to the point where when I reach a chapter from her PoV in game of thrones and I won’t read on for days because I can’t bear to be in her company 

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

I genuinely can’t think of one. Maybe I’m lucky and have never come across one but it’s probably more likely that I just wiped any such incidents from my mind. 

7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (Examples “lost princess” “corrupt ruler” “love triangle” etc.)

  

I’m not saying I dislike alien based books. I love them. What I hate is when there’s some mysterious stuff going on and it builds up so much and you’re all wtf?! But then it’s aliens in that annoying ‘we don’t have to explain anything now because it’s aliens’ way.  This sometimes applies to ghosts too. And it’s like oh we don’t have to have a logical reason for anything anymore and we can make up whatever rules we want because… Aliens. No sir. Just no. 

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

I can honestly say I don’t have one and this is why; when Harry Potter was getting big I refused to read it because ‘it was popular’ there was a lot of hype about the release of the fourth book and I finally decided to give it a go and read a chapter.  The words ‘the boy who lived’ greeted me and I’ve never looked back. Then the Twilight books were ‘popular’ and I refused to read them. I even let someone tell me all the spoilers. Then I read them and loved them. So I vowed never to refuse something based on popularity again because funnily enough, it’s probably popular for a reason!

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie or TV show adaptation” but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer to the book?

  
I enjoy them in such different ways that I find it really hard to say. I’d probably go with The Walking Dead because I love that show so much that I don’t read the graphic novels because I wouldn’t want to ruin the show (even though I know it differs massively anyway) if you don’t love this show yet you’re about to – seriously, watch it!
