So you may or may not have missed me recently π³ and I’ve missed you guys too! I decided to take a little break from writing my books because my brain was getting overloaded and somehow that extended into my blog too π but it’s a new month and my writing flow is back in force so here I am with a little post about why I believe taking a break can be important…
1. Brain overload. Sometimes you can get too close to your story, your characters, your world and rather than helping it actually makes it harder to see everything! You become so bogged down in the details that it’s hard to make the big decisions.
2. Internal autocorrect. This is an odd one but I find that if I proofread my work again and again in a short period of time, my brain starts to autocorrect the errors meaning that I don’t pick them out! The work is so familiar to me that I don’t notice minor typos or missing words because my brain autocorrects when I read them π² (this meme isn’t really right but it was so funny I had to use it)
3. My TBR. This is actually my favourite reason to have a writing break because I can spend that time reading! My TBR is out of control and this month I managed to read the first 3 Game of Thrones books π
4. You can actually read it like a fan when you go back! One of my favourite parts of writing is when I do a read through and have forgotten something I’ve written! And especially if I love it when I read it!! I’m the biggest fan girl going and there’s nothing better than being a fan of your own work π
5. Sometimes not thinking about your work helps you come up with the best ideas. I find that parts I may have found clunky to read will suddenly be easy to resolve when I found them impossible to fix before. Plot holes are filled, characters are fleshed out, bad guys have made their moves and everything suddenly just falls togetherness!
So there you have it – I’m back with a bang and I’m on a crazy writing splurge π let me know if any of this works for you too or if you find anything else that helps βΊοΈxoxo
I totally agree! As much as I enjoy writing it gets tiring sometimes and I run out of ideas and thoughts because everything gets clustered and mixed up

Ahh the eternal struggles of editing lol but in the end it should all be worth it! xoxo

Oh wow. My problem usually ends up being that no one likes my MC, which are huge changes, too. :p
But at least you found it! That’s the key! That’s why we edit so much. ^.^

Yeah even my betas missed it πͺ it wasn’t huge just a character that I introduced too early (he would have been recognised by some others if he arrived when he did) but it meant changing about six chapters quite a lot *sigh* but at least I spotted it! xoxo

Oh no! Plot holes are bad. One of the reasons I have spent the last few months looking for betas and CPs. Since they know nothing about the story, they have an automatic-fresh look. ^.^

Yeah then you can go back and enjoy it whilst hopefully not finding a massive plot hole like I did the last time ππ²xoxo

I get that! Been wanting to start querying one of my novels since like… October, but it needed to sit for a while. I totally get it and the frustration.

Thanks π it’s frustrating because you just wanna try and get it finished but sometimes that takes time/distance πxoxo

Oh man! #1! I totally get that one all the time. I’ll do a round of edits and then I’m like… ‘someone else has to read this. I don’t know what’s going on anymore’ but really I know too much of what’s going on. It’s hard to see it clearly. This kind of meshes into #2, as well. I know what happens. So, I read faster, skipping over the errors. *sigh*
I think #4 is fantastic! You /should/ like what you’re writing and being able to really enjoy it fresh-minded like a reader as opposed to a writer is the best part!

I hope so! Although I’m not too sure π but then, that’s what editing is for I guess!

Thank you! Your subconscious will probably work on the perfect end for you story while you take the break and when you go back to it it will all flow perfectly! βΊοΈxoxo

Glad to have you back! I totally get what you mean though. I’m having a post nano break to clear my head from writing a bit even though I didn’t actually finish my story…

It’s crazy isn’t it! Especially when consciously you want to see the errors but then your damn subconscious thinks it knows better lol xoxo

A www thank you so much! I really didn’t mean to leave and in my head I kept thinking it hadn’t been that long since I’d done a post but it really was π³ and I think I got lost in winterfell too hehe xoxo

I agree with all of this! I recently re-read my whole MS after not have read past the first 3 chapters for 6 months. And there were typos, dammit! Damn internal autocorrect!
And, like you, I had a good experience reading my book like a reader. I found myself grinning with glee in anticipation of what was coming up next. I hope that’s a good sign.
Great post, great to have you back!

I used the second half of November as a break month. It was good to take some time away from writing and blogging! You make a really good argument for taking a break – I do the same thing you do with autocorrecting when I re-read my work too soon!
